Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-09-12) letter no. 280 (1944-09-17) next letter (1944-09-19) envelope: front back front back back - rotated text blankenburg, september 17, 1944. My beloved mum! how glad i am that you survived this heavy attack! it must have been really terrible this time, but now it has happened as i often feared - they are already launching terrorist attacks on our beautiful vienna. Many people did not believe that they were still wreaking havoc here too. Who would have ever thought this, our beloved vienna, which is sung about in all the songs, if the old viennese knew. But as far as i'm concerned, everything can go to hell as long as you, my mum, stay healthy! you must be very careful now because it was definitely not just one attack! they could come from all directions now, if only this misery were over. There's a lot going on with the planes here too. Yesterday we had an alarm three times during the day and once at night. But that doesn't bother us much because they only fly over us. There is no sign of the war here yet, life goes on peacefully. I am always enchanted by this nice little town, but especially by the surrounding area. The town is practically one big orchard and flower garden. I wish i could show you all this, you would definitely like it. You could really relax and unwind! Date: 17 September 1944.
