Iconographic description: the genryūin factories in satsuma from the 17th century, and several others during the 18th century, specialized in cutlery using techniques imported from karatsu. They consist of superimposing a semi-translucent white cover (hakudaku-yū), composed of feldspar coating (chōseki-yū) and straw (warabai-yū), and a black cover (koku-yū). Thick cracks reveal the lower cover. When the pale cover is on top, it is called "shiro-jakatsu-yū" (white scorpion), and "kuro-jakatsu-yū" (black scorpion) when it is black (mm).
