The picture illustrates a scene from the “history of king omar and his sons”. The 20-year-old prince sharrkan, a heroic warrior and son of king omar of baghdad, comes upon a wadi during a military campaign in which there is a monastery and a castle. At night, in the bright moonlight, the prince, dressed in full armour, watches young girls enjoying a wrestling match on the bank of a stream. The most enchanting of all these girls is princess abrise, daughter of king hardub of rum, who conquers all the other girls. She is then challenged to a fight by her grandmother, lady zat ed-dawahi, who insists that both of them wrestle naked and only wrapped in a cloth. The picture corresponds to the following passage on page 145: “the girl quickly slipped under the old woman, grabbed the cloth with her left hand, wrapped her right hand around her neck and throat and lifted her up with both hands. And as the old woman tried to tear herself away, she ended up lying on her back. . “. Date: 1913. FvB-AN-143
