Portrait of Antoine de la Roque, Jean-Antoine Watteau, circa 1718

Antoine de la roque was a friend of watteau, and after losing one of his legs in the war, he used his literary talent to work as the editor-in-chief of the magazine mercure de france and as an opera librettist. The instruments and books next to him are reminiscent of this second life of his. Additionally, the muse and faunus depicted on the right side of the painting create an allegorical and mythical atmosphere. This is a unique work that is both a portrait of a friend and a mythical painting. This is a masterpiece that shows the sure skill of watteau, who developed the pastoral hobby into a rococo style and opened up the genre of banquet paintings. Date: circa 1718. Dimensions: height: 46 cm (18.1 in); width: 54.5 cm (21.4 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Depicted People: Antoine de Laroque. Collection: Tokyo Fuji Art Museum.
