description:
active in france since 1983, ru xiaofan became particularly known to the public through the production of his important series hundred flowers (1999-2002). The theme refers ironically to mao zedong's slogan "let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools compete", which launched the campaign of the same name, and preceded the first repressions directed against intellectual and artistic circles. Ru xiaofan's flowers are hybrid beings, often adorned with exaggerated feminine attributes. Since that time, the floral theme has occupied a central place in ru xiaofan's creations, whether paintings or sculptures. In recent years, this plastic work has led ru xiaofan to become interested in different materials: crystal, lacquer, metal, or more recently ceramic. Following his work in murano, ru xiaofan returned to china, to jingdezhen, the ancient capital of ceramics, to create new works. The female bust entitled youth is the result of this work.
