Mack, Ludwig, Die Unterwelt, gesamt, Rudolf Lohbauer, Stuttgart 1829
Ludwig mack / lithographer: rudolph lohbauer: the underworld (between 1824 and 1829), bas-relief, whereabouts unknown. Charon, the ferryman of hades, lies with his three-headed hellhound cerberus on the banks of the river styx, blocking the way back to the upper world for the weeping shadows (between the throne bench and charon) who are waiting for the judgement of the dead. The judges of the dead minos, aeakos (with the sceptre), rhadamanthys sit on the throne bench and question the shadows about their lives and their deeds. Happy are the shadows that have entered elysium (to the left of the throne bench), like the three graces dancing happily and those dreamily and peacefully listening to the lyre. Date: Stuttgart 1829.
