This view of the port of brest, at high tide, dates from 1858 (a year before the visit of napoleon iii). In this photograph we can see many ships at the dock. The city of brest is not yet connected to recouvrance by the national bridge* and the quays are open to all. We observe in the foreground, in the lower part of the fortifications, around twenty people. A series of cannons are stationed on the battery aux roses. The photographer, gustave le gray, got as close as possible to the subject to give strength and majesty to the entrance to the port. This photo is one of the oldest photographs showing the city. This is an ambrotype. Date: 9-12 août 1858.
