Naval Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571) (detail by Miguel de Cervantes), Juan Luna, 1887

The canvas represents the battle of lepanto, which was fought on october 7, 1571 in the gulf of lepanto in front of the city of nafpacto (or lepanto, from italian and there to spanish), located between the peloponnese and epirus, in continental greece. The ottoman turks faced off against a christian coalition, called the holy league, formed by the kingdom of spain, the papal states, the republic of venice, the order of malta, the republic of genoa and the duchy of savoy. The christians were victorious, saving only 30 turkish galleys. Thus, turkish expansionism in the western mediterranean was stopped. Miguel de cervantes participated in this battle, who was wounded, suffering the loss of mobility in his left hand, which earned him the nickname "one-armed lepanto. " this writer, who was very proud of having fought there, described it as "the most memorable and high occasion that past centuries have seen, nor do future centuries expect to see. ". Object Type: painting. Date: 1887. Dimensions: 550 × 350 cm (18 × 11.4 ft). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Senate of Spain. Juan Luna - La Batalla de Lepanto (detalle de Miguel de Cervantes)
