Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "at midday, the agent sent to the theater of war by the then king of finance looked at the french army as annihilated and hastened to dispatch a courier. The minister of police sent for the posters, the criers, and one of his associates arrived with a truck loaded with printed matter, when the evening courier, who had done excessive diligence, spread the news of the triumph which made france truly mad.
