“increasingly heated in the desire for victory, full of martial ardor, he advanced quickly along the canal. He was leaning on his standard, and with his voice and gesture he was commanding and animating his men, when an enemy ball, which apparently fell into the ammunition, caused the galley to explode, causing almost the whole thing to go up in flames. As the antenna fell, it crushed the head of mocenigo, who soon fell extinct. The unexpected event caused the venetians to be arrested immediately, and every attempt was abandoned. Furthermore, religious care was taken to recover the relics of the captain's galley, the standard, the lantern, and every other precious thing. . ". Date: 2 January 1863.
