My dearly beloved mother! i thank you from the bottom of my heart for the two packages and the letters. Yesterday my long wait was finally rewarded. I was quite surprised when i was read out as a package recipient. I had only expected a letter. You can imagine my joy. Thank you again for everything, the good cigarettes, zibeben [southern german, austrian: large, dried grape] and, above all, the necklace. Thank you also to mrs. Ischirtner on my behalf. So you can go back to work hard now. I have a new field of activity now, just please don't work too hard and don't wear yourself out too much! you're quite right, if something happens, don't shoot yourself, if they don't like it, they should let you go. I think of you very often and of the lovely holiday. You know that i've been discharged from the station. I'm doing light duty now. I've been here for 14 days and haven't done any duty yet. This way i'm passing the time quite well and enjoying myself as much as i can. I've also gone out here, there's not much going on but it is better than in the barracks. I'm slowly getting used to the way things are here. There's no help for it, you just have to get used to it. We just want to console ourselves with the fact that it will all end at some point. So you followed me at the station, it's a shame you couldn't catch me. But it wouldn't have been necessary for the cigarette holder, i had another one with me. Date: 26 February 1944.
