Ruisdaël" (the first three letters intertwined) handwritten label - inscribed in blue pencil on a museum label stuck to the back of the frame: "168" inventory number - written in white chalk on the back of the frame: "dut 926" inscription - in black paint and on a printed label, on the back of the frame: "89" iconographic description: in the foreground, the river ends in a bubbling waterfall from which rocks and two overturned tree trunks emerge. The human presence is reduced to the character sailing on a boat and to the two figures located to the right of the clump of trees. In the background, the houses are bordered on the left by a forest. The mill in the dark and the illuminated castle are reflected in the water of the river. The stormy sky is full of dark clouds. Historical commentary: the painting belonged to p. J. F. Vrancken, who sold it in antwerp, on may 15, 1838, to mr. Artaria of london, for 520 francs. It was then considered to come from the brushes of an imitator of the master. Then, it appeared in the collection of baron evrard rhoné. A large posthumous sale of his collections of works of art was organized on may 6-7-8, 1861 (paris, n°56) and it was on this occasion that eugène and auguste dutuit came into possession of the painting, purchased for 10,900 francs. In 1902, auguste dutuit bequeathed it to the city of paris and the landscape with the waterfall entered the collections of the petit palais.
