The Archangel Gabriel, Martin Schongauer

The Archangel Gabriel, Martin Schongauer

This engraving is half of a two-print scene depicting the annunciation to the virgin, when the angel gabriel told mary she would miraculously give birth to the son of god. Presumably buyers could purchase the prints separately, although schongauer probably hoped people would want to collect them both. His engraved lines masterfully emulate different natural qualities and textures, for example the spiraling locks of hair and the angel’s wings. Object Type: engraving process, print. Date: between circa 1490 and circa 1491 / circa from 1485 until 1490. Place of creation: Germany, 15th century. Dimensions: height: 16.7 cm (6.5 in) ; width: 11.7 cm (4.6 in). Medium: engraving. Collection: Cleveland Museum of Art. Martin Schongauer - The Angel of the Annunciation - 1958.173 - Cleveland Museum of Art
