V. E. Makovsky gogol's type. 1911 canvas, oil. 64 x 54 bottom right: v. Makovsky 1911 received in 1923 from mah, petrograd zh-2565 the portrait painting "gogol's type", despite its title and the associations it evokes with poprishchin, the hero of nikolai gogol's "notes of a madman", most likely depicts makovsky's contemporary, an elderly st. Petersburg official. The artist creates the image of a withdrawn, coldly reserved, somewhat arrogant and suspicious person, not accustomed to sharing his thoughts and feelings with others. Perhaps it was thanks to these qualities that he earned the st. George ribbon, which stood out like an orange spot against the dark background of his suit, while remaining a type close to gogol’s characters. Date: 1911.
