The first edition of the 'carceri' series, containing 14 plates (including title print), was published by giovanni bouchard in rome between 1749-1750. This first edition of the series was entitled: 'invenzioni capric di carceri all acqua forte'. Piranesi himself published the second edition in 1761. For this edition he edited all the plates and added two new plates. The series was given the new title: 'carceri d'invenzione'.
