historical commentary:
the sight of the observatory was erected in 1806 during the reign of napoleon, but the name of the emperor was excised with a chisel. This target has nothing to do with the meteorological observatory, it is in fact the benchmark for the paris meridian. (see: “life and history of the 14th arrondissement” published by hervas, 1988).
