Portrait of Anne Joliffe, Gainsborough Dupont, 1775

Portrait of Anne Joliffe, Gainsborough Dupont, 1775

The subject of this portrait is anne, daughter of reverend robert twyford of kilmersdon, somersetshire. In 1778 she married thomas samuel joliffe (1746–1824). His portrait, conceived as a companion piece, still hangs at ammedown house in somerset, the couple’s original residence. The artist gainsborough dupont was the son of thomas gainsborough’s sister sarah. He apprenticed with his uncle in 1772, and eventually became his assistant. He ultimately set up his own studio, and it is often difficult to distinguish the late works of both artists. This painting, however, is generally believed to be by dupont. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1775. Place of creation: England, 18th century. Dimensions: Unframed: 75.5 x 63.5 cm (29 3/4 x 25 in.). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Cleveland Museum of Art.
