The production was staged at the russian private opera of s. I. Mamontov in the premises of the theater of g. G. Solodovnikov, the premiere took place on december 26, 1897. In one of the main female roles - princess volkhova - performed n. I. Zabela-vrubel. The composer recalled the premiere as follows: "the opera was a huge success with the public. <…> among the artists, sekar-rozhansky stood out as sadko and zabela (wife of the artist vrubel) as the sea princess. " mikhail vrubel was the author of volkhova's costume, as well as many other stage costumes of nadezhda ivanovna. The composition "farewell of the sea king to princess volkhova" was performed based on impressions from the opera production. Such independent elaboration of opera motifs testifies to the closeness of artistic impressions, vrubel's searches and musical themes explored in this opera by the composer. N. A. Rimsky-korsakov wrote about his creation: "the opera "sadko" was presented in the form of seven scenes of epic content. The real and the fantastic, the dramatic (as such is outlined by the epic) and the everyday are in complete harmony with each other. " mikhail vrubel also strove for this in his epic works. In a letter to v. E. Savinsky from venice (march - april 1885), the artist reflected: "ah, dear vasily evmenevich, how much beauty we have in rus'. <…> and you know what stands at the head of this beauty – the form that is created by nature forever <…> infinitely dear because it is the bearer of the soul, which will open up to you alone and tell you yours. Do you understand? " the large watercolor "the sea princess" (1898), depicting n. I. Zabela-vrubel in the role of volkhova, is in the state russian museum. Date: 1898.
