Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-12-14) letter no. 304 (1944-12-19) next letter (1944-12-29) envelope: front back card - front card - back card - back - rotated text blankenburg, december 19, 1944. My dear, dear mum! if you are holding this letter of mine in your hands, it must be that time again and the most wonderful holiday and the most wonderful evening of the year is here. Your thoughts then go back to the past and you realize how quickly time flies. How wonderful was the time before christmas, all this secret doing and hiding. Do you remember how i surprised you in the hallway with the toboggan, or when dad and i “tidied” the tree? when you rang the bell in the evening and the three of us stood in front of the glow of the lights, i still remember and feel it all as if it were today. I have to tell you again and again how happy and content i was at home and with you. Other children may have had more at the table but i only really know today that i always had much more than everyone else, i had you and dad. I want to thank you especially and deeply today for this childhood of mine. This time i have nothing to give you, believe me [my mother, this is definitely not easy for me. ]. Date: 19 December 1944.
