Jealousy - Sandys

Drawing, chalk and pencil on board, entitled 'jealousy', by the artist anthony frederick augustus sandys. From the collection of the laing art gallery in newcastle jealousy is symbolised by the yellow of the daffodils at the front of this scene. In the background is a heart pierced by an arrow fired by the god of love, cupid, dressed in medieval robes. A. F. A. Sandys was a friend of dante gabriel rossetti, and was a member of the pre-raphaelite circle of artists. His work concentrated on female heads in a style influenced by rossetti and edward burne-jones. His pictures were always extremely detailed, and often included flowers.
