An undated early 18th-century engraving containing advice from a (married) frenchwoman to her potential lovers on the proper spaniel-like behavior to adopt: the poem reads: "ce chien qui m'obeit doit servir de modéle a tout galant qui voudra m'en conter: il est discret, complaisant et fidéle, amants, pour être aymés, tachez de l'jmiter. De poilly je vend a paris chez les freres de poilly rue st jacques a la belle jmage -" (note that "j" is sometimes used where modern french would use "i", and the e-grave letter "è" is not used according to modern norms. . ).
