Drawing by pieter breugel the elder, 1564 (albertina, vienna). Pictured is the annual procession of epileptics to st. John's church in molenbeek (near brussels). They had to dance across the bridge to be cured of the "falling disease" for a year. Local residents bring them food and drink. Inscription: these sin dye pilgrims who must dance on sint jans dach buyten bruessel te muelebeec and if you have danced or jumped a bridge then sin sy have been born for a whole year of sint jans siechte • bruegel • m • ccccc • ixiiij.
