Berlin Neues Museum vaterländischer Saal Drachen restored, Gustav Heidenreich, 1852

Fresco by gustav heidenreich illustrating norse mythology in the "fatherland hall" of the new museum, berlin. On the left, four water nixes loll at a lakeshore. The reclining nix in the foreground is picking branches from hanging leafy boughs. Beside her, a second nix is propped on her harp. The two nixes in the background gaze pensively across the lake. The central field shows a dragon in the shape of a griffon, with an eagle's head, eagle wings, and a lion's body. Hissing and with wings spread, he guards over a treasure comprising a helmet, a shield, a sword, a crown, rings, and coins. On the right side, two giants combat a dragon. They are trying to throw boulders into its open maw. Date: 1852.
