Napoleon (right), on the deck of the 'bellerophon', approaches three tall british officers, who stand together facing him. He weeps, handkerchief in hand, and says: "capitain la grace que je vous demande c'est la vie sauve. " the captain (maitland) says: "c'est à quoi nous nous attendions. " the next officer: "l'on voit bien qu'il n'est pas français"; the third: "god dam qu'il est petit. " napoleon, in his gesture of supplication, has dropped his hat. Large documents project from his coat-tail pockets: 'la maison d'autriche à cesser [sic] de régner [in italy]': 'la dinastie napoléoniene à régner et régneras [sic] sur les espagnes'; 'je suis le dieu de la guerre'.
