The painting represents the events that took place on la rambla during the riot of august 5, 1835: the dragging of the corpse of marshal pere nolasc bassa and his burning in the bonfire made with the papers from the police archives. An large number of the rioters were longshoremen of the port and this is reflected in their clothing. They are armed with pistols, rifles and sabres.
