Copperplate engraving created by martin bernigeroth in 1703 with a portrait of the polymath gottfried wilhelm leibniz wearing a full wig: bust to the right in front of a cross-hatched background in a profiled oval frame on a base parapet within a parallel-hatched rectangle. The latin oval inscription reads "gotefridvs gvilielmvs leibnizivs s[erenissi]mo elect[ori] brvns[vico-] lvneb[urgico] ab int[imis] consil[iis]". The base contains the distich written in latin: "hoc duce in immensi penetravimus intima veri, nec probat autorem mens magis ulla deum. " in the translation edited by peter mortzfeld for the portrait collection of the herzog august library in wolfenbüttel in the version dated february 26, 1999: “under his leadership we have penetrated into the innermost regions of infinite truth, and yet no spirit proves god as the creator more than his. ” the engraving shows the signature “bernigeroth sc. ” in the base on the right. The above digital copy is a section of the 455 x 313 mm sheet with the plate dimensions 296 x 215 mm and the image dimensions 288 x 206 mm. Date: 1703.
