The painting is apparently the first picture of a shipwreck that friedrich painted. Since then he returned to this theme several times. He probably made studies for the painting on the shores of rügen (cf. Zschoche, caspar david friedrich auf rügen, 1998, p. 136). A concretely drawn layout does not seem to have been preserved, but he has on several occasions drawn several stones at the water's edge (cf. Christina grummt, caspar david friedrich. Die zeichnungen. München 2011, vol. 1 & 2, no. 311, 446, 820, 821, 822). The motif is closely related to j. C. Dahl's 'søstykke med vrag' (version in bergen (undated) and in smk from 1831 (kms7599)). The painting anticipates the main work 'the ice ocean' from 1824 (hamburger kunsthalle). Object Type: painting. Genre: marine art. Date: 1817. Dimensions: height: 222 mm (8.74 in); width: 308 mm (12.12 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Statens Museum for Kunst.
