iconographic description:
this scene takes place during a reception. On the left, a servant with a monkey's head has just returned bringing a tray filled with petits fours and glasses of alcohol. Three men wearing jackets rush to seize the food. They are represented with one a wolf's head, the other a shark's head and the third a dog's head. Three ladies are seated at the back of the room. They eat and drink, their plates on their knees. They are represented with the heads of a doe, a lioness and a grasshopper. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "the male population of a ball in paris, as in the provinces, is made up of four very distinct species of individuals: the dancers, the players, the conversationalists and the gourmands. The gourmand in the lounge has a very particular appearance: eager as a shark, as fond as a barbet, or voracious as a wolf, he willingly places himself on the side of the antechamber, near the kitchen rather than in the living room.
