The caricature appeared in the niles weekly register (see hezekiah niles) on january 5 and 12, 1828, regarding the "corrupt bargain" accusations made my presidentail candidate andrew jackson against secretary of state henry clay in 1824. Secretary clay is shown restraining a seated, uniformed general jackson and sewing up his mouth. From clay's pocket protrudes a slip of paper reading, "cure for calumny. " below the image is a quote from shakespeare's "hamlet," ". Clay might stop a hole, to keep the wind away. " on the wall behind him are the words "plain sewing done here. ". Date: 1834.
