iconographic description:
three men in ceremonial uniforms wait in a small room. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "-- my little mother mahuchet, what good is that? to make herself hated. It is better to get good wages. A complainer, a complainer and a half! and we spare her bile. She wants to go, asks me to support her, we are going. -- madame is not there. -- known! "we'll wait for him," said mother mahuchet, "even if i stay there until midnight, and we camp in the antechamber and talk. " [excerpt from the actors without knowing it, by honoré de balzac]
