Samuel luke fildes - the empty chair, engraving of a water colour by fildes (the graphic, christmas number, 1870. ) the graphic version has the chair at a slightly different angle. 'the empty chair, gad's hill - 9th of june 1870'. Fildes was illustrating "edwin drood" at the time of charles dickens' death. The watercolour shows dickens' empty chair in his study.
