Officieren en vaandeldragers van de Jonge Schutterij, Caesar van Everdingen, 1657

Civic guard companies were split into units. These are the officers of the green and white units of the young civic guard. The man seated, looking directly at the viewer, is captain jacob dierten cromhout. In the nineteenth century someone cut a strip off the bottom of the painting, perhaps when it was displayed at the town hall. Civic guard portraits are a typically dutch phenomenon and after amsterdam and haarlem, alkmaar has the largest collection. Date: 1657.
