Henri iv and the abbess of montmartre original canvas by belot signed lower left label on the reverse on the central bar of the frame bearing an inscription in pen and ink: “184 / vaffelard. Henri 4 and the abefs of montmartre. No. 230. » 56. 2 x 38 cm exposure: paris, salon of 1824, n°1660 (“henri iv and the abbess of montmartre”) marie-catherine de beauvilliers is a nun from montmartre abbey who welcomed henri iv when he besieged paris in 1590 during the wars of religion. She then becomes a royal mistress. Eight years later, the king made her mother abbess. Date: circa 1824.
