Portrait of the enlightened spanish statesman and politician zenón de somodevilla (1702-1781), who was marquis of ensenada and held the positions of secretary of the treasury, war and navy and the indies. He was also successively appointed general superintendent of revenue, lieutenant general of the admiralty, secretary of state, notary of the kingdoms of spain and knight of the order of the golden fleece and the order of malta, and was also state councilor during the reigns of philip v, ferdinand vi and charles iii of spain.
