Cigarette label. Special cigarettes to conde deu. The brito alves collection is made up of 1,252 cigarette labels using the lithographic technique. It was started by the merchant vicente de brito alves and continued by his son, the pernambuco lawyer josé de brito alves (1887-1963). In 1964, the collection was donated by the family to the then joaquim nabuco institute for social research. It constitutes a rare and valuable cultural and artistic heritage, recording historical facts, uses, customs and aspects of the cultural life of brazilian society and particularly of pernambuco, from the end of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century.
