The portrait of a gentleman called giovan battista castaldi and erroneously identified with the "portrait of signor giovan battista castaldi" preserved in the wardrobe of ranuccio i in 1587, this gentleman in black was attributed to parmigianino and considered a sort of pendant of the "portrait of galeazzo sanvitale". In the nineteenth century, in connection with the latter then believed to be christopher columbus, he was baptized with the equally imaginative name of amerigo vespucci. The work, on the other hand, lacking the vibrant mystery of parmigianino's portraits, should be attributed to another artist active in parma, perhaps identifiable with michelangelo anselmi. Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1530-1540. Dimensions: height: 98 cm (38.5 in); width: 83 cm (32.6 in). Medium: oil on panel. Collection: National Museum of Capodimonte.
