Holy martyr artemon. Simon ushakov (?) 1670s-1680s. Armoury chamber icon painting workshop. 122 x 77. 4 cm. Wood, gesso tempera. Moscow. Collection of archpriest vladimir. The separate image of artemon, bishop of laodicea (303), on the large church icon is unique; its creation was undoubtedly connected with a special order. Considering that the style of the image is a typical work of the armoury chamber icon painting workshop, it can be stated that it was commissioned by the boyar artemon sergeevich matveyev, in whose family natalia kirillovna naryshkina, the second wife of tsar alexei mikhailovich and mother of peter i, was raised. The construction of two churches is associated with the boyar’s name, from which the published monument could have originated. Most likely, it was created for the estate church of a. S. Matveyev - the church of the savior not made by hands on setun (1673-1676), where, according to available information, there was a similar image. The second church where it could have been located is the moscow church of st. Nicholas in stolpy (1669), which was built with the boyar's funds, and where he was buried after the death during the first streltsy revolt (1682). The icon is distinguished by high professionalism of painting, depth and softness of the image, thoroughness and subtlety of the decorative details. The rich pattern of the saint's clothes reproduces the ornamentation of expensive western european fabrics, the gospel cover repeats the works of court jewelers of the last quarter of the 17th century. Considering that the iconostasis of the church on setun contained an image of the savior not made by hands (belchev collection in hamburg), which had the signature of simon ushakov, one can assume that the authorship of the published icon was also that of the famous icon painter. Date: 1670-е-1680-е годы..
