iconographic description:
portrait of mademmoiselle mars, in 1830 (mademoiselle boutet known as, 1779-1847), actress at the comédie française. Theater. Three-quarter right bust, jewelry (cross), muscovite hat. Historical commentary:
an illustrious figure in the french comedy, miss mars will shine in comedy (célimène, philaminte) and in tragedy (the duchess of guise, desdemona, dona sol) through her art of "carving and embroidery. . . . Delicious garland of small pleasures" (b. Dussane, cited in cat. Exhibition carnavalet "palais royal", 1988). This drawing dated 1830 is related to the full-length portrait of ms. Mars painted by gérard (formerly kept in the louvre) probably with the help of ms. Godefroy, his collaborator. The bust of the actress is faithfully reproduced there, without the hands and without the decor. Several variants of gérard's portrait will also be engraved: bust without hands, with one hand, full length. (see carg portrait pc 128). Mode of acquisition: purchase
date of acquisition: 01–06–1893
institution: carnavalet museum, history of paris
inventory number: d. 5845. Date: En 1830.
