Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-01-04) letter no. 220 (1944-01-12) next letter (1944-01-14) envelope: front back text [it is in the] vicinity of halberstadt. Now be careful, mum, i had my last holiday in july - it was over six months ago now. The story is going around that all the soldiers who come from russia as replacements and who haven't had holiday for six months get it in the general company! you can be assured, mum, that i will do everything in my power to ensure that i don't miss out on this holiday - no means will be too good or too bad for me - they don't care when it comes to cancellations. So we still have reason to hope. Please promise me that you will not be offended or upset because it would be the devil's work if this did not work out. As soon as i arrive in blankenburg i will write to you immediately. The mail from troppau will probably be forwarded to me. Your package from december 26th has not arrived yet, i have been waiting for it for so long. How was it sent, field post or with stamps? i am in very good health. I have no complaints and nothing else. Despite the "complaint" from above about vacation, i am in a good mood and in a good mood, what else can you do? yesterday i celebrated my farewell, first we danced with the sisters in the hospital and then i went to a "viennese evening" with franz borsos and lots of viennese people, it was very nice. This morning i could have left at 5. 10 a. M. But i preferred to sleep in first so i can get there early enough. Unfortunately i cannot go via vienna because the detour is too big. Now, my beloved mother, i ask you again to be strong. I will do everything i can to come to you! please say hello to all my friends, karl, adi, kurt and everyone else. Warm greetings and kisses from your hansl. Date: 12 January 1944.
