Official opening of the indooroopilly toll bridge, brisbane, 1936 this suspension bridge spans the brisbane river, connecting indooroopilly to chelmer. Walter taylor was the driving force behind the contruction of the bridge, being promotor, constructor and engineer of the company which was formed. The bridge was named after walter taylor in april 1956. An important historical feature of the bridge is that it re-uses as cables the wire ropes used initially in the erection of the sydney harbour bridge. Construction began early in 1932 and the bridge was officially opened on february 14, 1936. The toll was removed in october 1965. [information taken from: c o'connor, walter taylor bridge, 1998] for many years people lived in the towers at either end of the bridge. This image shows the governor of queensland, sir leslie orme wilson, and the official party crossing the bridge. Walter taylor is at the far right. Date: 14 February 1936.
