Common sunflower and greyhound, Alexander Marshal, c. 1650-82

Common sunflower and greyhound, Alexander Marshal, c. 1650-82

A page of watercolours of a large sunflower and a dog in miniature. The sunflower is native to the americas and was brought to england in the sixteenth century. The creatures which marshal often drew on the same sheet as his plant studies are usually out of scale, and seem to be included as light-hearted additions to the florilegium. Provenance: presented to george iv. Date: c. 1650-82. Dimensions: 45.6 x 33.3 cm (sheet of paper). Medium: watercolour. Common sunflower and greyhound (RCIN 924404)
