1885 cartoon by alfred bryan that appeared in the ent’racte annual for that year. W. S. Gilbert is depicted in a suit of armour, wielding a mallet labelled 'discipline' and towering over the diminutive figure of richard d'oyly carte. When this was published, the ironmaster, a play by pinero had recently finished a successful run at the st james's theatre, so this cartoon was a reference to a different type of 'iron master' at the savoy theatre. Date: Nominally 1895, actually 1894.
