Countess Anna Artemievna Buturlina (née Vorontsova), Feodosiy Yanenko, late 1790s

Paired with the portrait of count d. P. Buturlin (late 1790s) countess anna artemyevna buturlina (1777 – 1854), daughter of count a. I. Vorontsov, was brought up from childhood in a refined atmosphere of reverent attitude towards art, which contributed to the formation of her own artistic taste and love of painting. She was a very young girl when d. G. Levitsky painted a series of portraits of all members of her family. These images, created in the late 1780s – early 1790s, are kept in the russian museum. In 1793, several years before yanenko created the paired portraits of the buturlins, anna artemyevna and her husband posed for the outstanding artist f. S. Rokotov on the occasion of their wedding. The images were kept in the collection of a. A. Rokotov’s parents. Buturlina estate vorontsovka tambov province (now - in the tambov regional art gallery). Despite the fact that the two pairs of portraits by rokotov and yanenko are close in time of execution, in terms of imagery they belong to different eras. The impeccably straight posture, frozen tense pose and routine smile of rokotov's models reveal their inner constraint. On the contrary, the heroes of yanenko's portraits feel completely natural and relaxed, which can be judged not only by their relaxed poses, but also by the calm expression on their faces with an attentive look, expressing a readiness for dialogue with the viewer. The atmosphere of inner harmony and pleasant solitude is created by the surrounding landscape, the dense greenery of which resembles a remote abandoned corner of a landscape park. Such views often served as backgrounds for portraits of the era of sentimentalism. Anna artemyevna found a like-minded person in her husband, who also had a reverent attitude towards fine art and showed a keen interest in artistic life. The countess herself tried to realize herself as an artist. Her teacher in miniature painting on ivory was the famous artist a. Molinari, who lived for some time in the buturlins' belkino estate. Paired portraits of yanenko were kept in the buturlin collection of family portraits in the dubna estate in the tula province. Object Type: painting. Date: late 1790s.
