Shortly after he settled in cologne around 1435, stefan lochner painted a large triptych with the last judgment - flanked by the scenes of the martyrdoms of the apostles exhibited here. In this bravura piece, the young artist impressed the elite of his adopted country with his joy in storytelling, the splendor of colors, the rich hallmarking of the gold ground and his knowledge of contemporary painting in the netherlands, especially that of jan van eyck.
