Spätgotik exhibition Wings of Martyrdom of Apostles Altarpiece 9221, Stefan Lochner

Stefan lochner (around 1400 meersburg-1451 cologne). Two altar wings with the martyrdoms of the apostles, around 1435. Left: petrus, paulus, andreas, johannes, jacobus the elder, bartholomäus. Right: thomas, philip, james the younger, matthew, simon and judas, matthias. Walnut wood. Shortly after he settled in cologne around 1435, stefan lochner painted a large triptych with the last judgment - flanked by the scenes of the martyrdoms of the apostles exhibited here. In this bravura piece, the young artist impressed the elite of his adopted country with his joy in storytelling, the splendor of colors, the rich hallmarking of the gold ground and his knowledge of contemporary painting in the netherlands, especially that of jan van eyck. Städel museum frankfurt am main.
