S. M. Kamakau, Hawaiian Historian, c. before 1917

Samuel kamakau (october 29, 1815 – september 5, 1876) was a hawaiian historian and scholar. He wrote a series of newspaper articles from 1866 to 1871 that are generally regarded as the most detailed history of hawaii during that period. He also served in a number of government positions, such as judge and legislator. Caption reads s. M. Kamakau, hawaiian historian. From a damaged daguerreotype owned by mrs. Benj. L.
