a crowd is dancing, men and women are having fun, skirts are twirling. Only in the center of the image a pierrot remains standing, inert. Illustration of the words of béranger's song "mon carnaval" of which here is an extract: "yes, i see these amorous dances where beauty triumphs at every step. Of twenty dancers i see the happy hands seizing, leaving, re-grasping a thousand charms. In these pleasures that your heart forgets me: a single sad word can disturb its course. " béranger (1780-1857) is a prolific and extremely popular french singer to whom balzac is reference in several of his novels. "this worthy gentleman particularly hated priests, he was part of this large herd of simpletons who subscribed to the constitutionnel, and was very concerned about the refusal of burials. He adored voltaire, although his preferences were for piron, vadé, collé. Naturally he admired béranger, whom he ingeniously called the high priest of lisette's religion.
