Christmas Eve, study., Viggo Johansen, 1891

Christmas Eve, study., Viggo Johansen, 1891

This painting is a study for the one in the hirschsprung collection in copenhagen. In the art magazine antik og auktion no. 4, 2002 the story of the painting was recounted by viggo johansen's grandchild, professor tobias faber. The artwork is based on a touching story: in viggo johansen's childhood home there was no dancing around the christmas tree. Viggo johansen's father had forbidden it, because it reminded him of viggo's brother, who died very young. But when viggo johansen became a father himself, he never held back, as told by his daughters gerda and bodil. Especially in 1891, where he bought one of the largest christmas trees in copenhagen for the appartment in amaliegade 35, where he lived with his wife martha and their six children. He also decided to make a painting of the festivities around the tree, and it stayed in the room for four months. No one was allowed to touch it and when the needles of the fir tree began to fall off, the family had to find new spruce branches to tie to the tree, so viggo johansen could finish his painting. Object Type: painting. Date: 1891. Dimensions: height: 58 cm (22.8 in); width: 63 cm (24.8 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Unknown. Viggo Johansen - Juleaften, studie - 1891
