Apse of Santa Maria d'Àneu (detail)

The decoration of the apse of santa maria d'àneu is an example of the overlap of themes and motifs from the old and new testaments in catalan romanesque painting. On the vault is represented the epiphany, with mary in majesty and the magi. In the lower register, the two seraphim from isaiah's vision in the temple of jerusalem (is 6. 3-6) appear who sing "s(an)c(tu)s s(an)c(tu)s s(an)c(tu)s" and bring the tongs with burning coals to the lips of the prophets elijah and isaiah. In the middle, the four fiery wheels of yahweh's chariot allude to ezekiel's vision (ezekiel 1:15). It is also necessary to underline the role of the three archangels, michael, gabriel and raphael, lawyers on the day of the final judgment. This original thematic finds its sources in byzantine repertoires of italy. Date: Final s.XII - inici s. XI. Dimensions: 700 x 410 x 210 cm.
