iconographic description:
engraving illustrating verses from the poem xxxvi, "the statue", from the collection "les rayons et les ombres". Freely and more realistically interpret the drawing by victor hugo kept at the museum [le parc abandoned], inv. No. 883. Historical commentary:
this engraving was published in the magazine “l’artiste” in september 1855. The name of victor hugo appears discreetly as “painter” while the letter reproduces lines from the poem “la statue” from the collection “les rayons et les ombres”. On page 70, this “engraving of the number” is presented, under the title “crépuscule” by a few verses from another outlaw, auguste vacquerie, taken from “demi-teinte”: “the drawings of victor hugo. / i guessed the motif / why art always lights up / your drawings in a lively tone: / you make them with a pen. ". The engraver who appears discreetly under the initials "j. L. " is jules laurens who visited victor hugo in jersey a few months earlier, in april and to whom this drawing belonged. This publication defies imperial censorship and represents a gesture of friendship on the part of arsène houssaye, director of “l’artiste”. Themes / subjects / places represented:
poetry, rays and shadows (v. Hugo)
