The old testament heroine judith saves her besieged hometown by visiting the enemy general holofernes in his camp, seducing him and then cutting off his head. The motif of the painting was changed by overhauls at an unknown time before 1819: it now shows joel killing sisera with a nail. Only after extensive restoration and removal of the overpainting in 1973 and 1984 can cranach's original composition be seen again. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1530.
