Judith with the head of Holofernes, Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1530
The old testament heroine judith saves her besieged hometown by visiting the enemy general holofernes in his camp, seducing him and then cutting off his head. The motif of the painting was changed by overhauls at an unknown time before 1819: it now shows joel killing sisera with a nail.
